Why can I see daylight through my roof from the loft?
The short answer
Daylight in a loft is not automatically a defect. Ventilation gaps at the eaves and around ridge vents are meant to be there. Light through the slope itself is different: it means the covering and underlay no longer close over that point, and where light passes, wind-driven rain and snow will eventually follow.
What evidence should you look for?
Pinpricks or a thin line of light through the slope, away from the eaves and ridge.
- What it can mean
- A covering is missing or cracked and the underlay is torn.
- What else could explain it
- Older roofs with no underlay at all can show light between coverings while still shedding water reasonably well.
Repair soon · Inspection needed to confirm
Even light along the eaves or around a ridge vent.
- What it can mean
- Designed ventilation doing its job.
- What else could explain it
- A displaced eaves tray or missing comb filler can look the same but leaves the roof open to birds and driven rain.
Monitor
What could this mean?
Note where the light sits relative to rafters and purlins. That reference makes the point findable from outside, which is exactly what a roofer needs to locate it accurately.
How serious is it? — Repair soon
An open path through the covering will admit driven rain and snow even if the loft is dry today.

- Roof RepairsA roof repair fixes a localised fault — slipped slates, cracked tiles, failed flashing, a leaking valley or a split flat-roof seam — without replacing the whole roof. Most Cumbrian domestic repairs are completed in a single visit once the true cause of the leak has been identified.
- Slate RoofingSlate roofing uses natural or reclaimed slate laid in courses with a head lap set by the roof pitch and site exposure. It is the traditional covering across Cumbria and, correctly fixed, is among the longest-lasting roof coverings available.
What should you do next?
Mark the spot from inside — a chalk mark on the nearest rafter works well — and check the same area again during heavy rain to see whether water follows the light.
