What photographs should a roofer show me before I agree to repairs?
The short answer
Three kinds of image, at minimum: the defect itself close enough to see what has failed, a wider shot showing where on the roof it sits, and the condition immediately around it. Together those let you judge whether the proposed scope matches the problem, rather than taking the recommendation on trust.
What evidence should you look for?
Only general views of the roof, with no close images of any defect.
- What it can mean
- The recommendation has not been evidenced to you.
- What else could explain it
- Some defects genuinely photograph poorly, particularly in shadow or heavy moss.

What could this mean?
Photographs are for your understanding, not just the roofer's record. If an image does not help you see what is being described, ask for a better one.
What this evidence cannot tell you
Photographs show the outside of a roof at one moment. They cannot show the condition of the fixings, underlay or timbers behind an intact covering, so a set of images supports a recommendation rather than proving it.
Related services
- Roof RepairsA roof repair fixes a localised fault — slipped slates, cracked tiles, failed flashing, a leaking valley or a split flat-roof seam — without replacing the whole roof. Most Cumbrian domestic repairs are completed in a single visit once the true cause of the leak has been identified.
- Drone Roof InspectionsA drone roof inspection surveys a roof using a camera-equipped UAV, producing high-resolution photographs and video of every slope, chimney, valley and gutter without scaffolding, ladders or anyone setting foot on the roof. It is faster, safer and cheaper than traditional access, and produces evidence you can keep.
What should you do next?
Ask for the images by email so you can look at them properly rather than on a phone screen on the doorstep.
