Why does my roof leak when it is windy?
The short answer
Wind pushes rain sideways and upwards, so it reaches places ordinary rainfall never touches: under laps, behind flashings, past verge details and around rooflight upstands. A roof that is watertight in still, heavy rain and leaks in a westerly gale is telling you the fault sits at an edge or junction facing that weather.
What evidence should you look for?
Damp appearing only with wind from one particular direction.
- What it can mean
- An exposed detail on that elevation is being loaded in a way it cannot resist.
- What else could explain it
- Wind-driven rain also penetrates cracked render, poor pointing and window heads on the same elevation.
Investigate · Inspection needed to confirm
What could this mean?
Recording wind direction alongside each occurrence is genuinely diagnostic. It narrows the search from a whole roof to one elevation.

- Roof RepairsA roof repair fixes a localised fault — slipped slates, cracked tiles, failed flashing, a leaking valley or a split flat-roof seam — without replacing the whole roof. Most Cumbrian domestic repairs are completed in a single visit once the true cause of the leak has been identified.
- LeadworkLeadwork is the formed metal detailing that waterproofs the junctions of a roof — chimney flashings, valleys, soakers, box gutters, dormer cheeks and parapet linings. Correctly sized and fixed lead outlasts almost every other component on a roof.
What should you do next?
Log the date, wind direction and where the damp appeared for the next two or three wet spells, then share that log at inspection.
