Can repeated slipped slates indicate failing roof fixings?
The short answer
Usually, yes. Nails installed at the same time, in the same conditions, tend to corrode at a similar rate, so once several slates slip in unrelated positions the likely explanation is the fixings rather than the slates. The recovered nails settle the question quickly.
What evidence should you look for?
Recovered nails that are corroded, thinned or snapped at the shank.
- What it can mean
- Nail fatigue is releasing sound slates.
- What else could explain it
- Slates can also fracture around the hole while the nail remains intact — a different problem.
Investigate · Inspection needed to confirm
What could this mean?
This distinction matters financially. Failing nails under sound slate can often be addressed by refixing or re-laying; spent slate cannot.
What this evidence cannot tell you
Recovered nails show the condition of those nails. They make a strong inference about the rest of the roof, fitted at the same time, but they do not prove every remaining fixing has reached the same stage.

- Slate RoofingSlate roofing uses natural or reclaimed slate laid in courses with a head lap set by the roof pitch and site exposure. It is the traditional covering across Cumbria and, correctly fixed, is among the longest-lasting roof coverings available.
- Roof RepairsA roof repair fixes a localised fault — slipped slates, cracked tiles, failed flashing, a leaking valley or a split flat-roof seam — without replacing the whole roof. Most Cumbrian domestic repairs are completed in a single visit once the true cause of the leak has been identified.
What should you do next?
Ask for a photograph of the recovered nails and slates. It is one of the most informative images anyone can take on your roof.
